Ireland Ready to Join Peacekeeping Mission in Ukraine
(MENAFN) Ireland is prepared to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, Prime Minister Micheal Martin informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a call on Monday.
The discussion focused on efforts to secure a ceasefire and establish lasting peace in Ukraine. Martin reiterated Ireland's commitment to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty, saying: “I assured President Zelenskyy that Ireland stands ready to support this work, including through the provision of non-lethal military assistance and our openness to taking part in any appropriately mandated peacekeeping mission in line with the UN Charter.”
He further emphasized Ireland's continued efforts to assist Ukraine in its bid for European Union membership, highlighting the nation's steadfast support for Ukraine's long-term goals.
The leaders also agreed on the importance of sustaining pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, including the imposition of additional sanctions by the European Union.
Martin expressed his sorrow over the recent Russian missile attacks on Kyiv, which Kyiv claims resulted in civilian casualties, including the deaths of children.
“I expressed my view that recent attacks by Russia are a clear demonstration that President Putin is not interested in peace, despite the efforts of the international community to advance negotiations,” Martin said. “The deliberate targeting of civilians, as we have seen in Kyiv, is a war crime and I extended my deep condolences to President Zelenskyy for the devastating loss of life, especially of children,” he added.
In related developments, US President Donald Trump has taken the lead in attempts to end the war in Ukraine, having called for a permanent peace agreement rather than just a ceasefire after his recent meeting with Putin in Alaska.
